The basics

Balloon Columns, Towers and Pillars: What They Are

Columns, towers, pillars and posts all describe one thing: balloons stacked up a pole set in a weighted base.

Because a balloon column stands by itself at roughly 5 to 8 feet, it can go nearly anywhere: beside a front door, at both ends of a stage, along a ceremony aisle, at the corners of a dance floor or next to an expo booth. No balloon piece is more flexible, and nothing adds height to a room faster without hanging a thing from the ceiling.

Columns are also the budget-friendly way to mark an entrance. A pair costs less than a full balloon arch, and joining their tops with an arch later turns them into the classic arch-and-column combination that school dances and store openings rely on.

Column styles

Balloon Column Styles

The pole and base never change. The pattern you wrap around them is where the style comes from.

Classic stacked columns

Four-balloon clusters stacked snugly up the pole in one color or in color blocks. Simple, bold and the lowest-priced column we make.

Spiral balloon columns (2, 3 and 4 colors)

Shift the colors in each cluster and they corkscrew up the pole like a barber's sign. Two colors look clean and sharp, three colors (red, white and blue for the 4th, say) get requested most, and four colors work for rainbow parties and team themes.

Organic balloon columns

Loose clusters of mixed balloon sizes give a softer, puffier column that matches an organic arch or garland. They take more balloons, so they cost more than classic columns, and they're the modern pick for weddings and showers.

Themed and novelty columns

A column can become a character or an object: a crayon for the first day of school, a palm tree for a pool party, a traffic light for a race-car birthday, a football for a homecoming pep rally or a candy cane at Christmas. Themed columns are the playful way to dress a school hallway or a kids' party.

Toppers

Balloon Columns With Numbers and Toppers

The topper is what ties a column to your event.

  • Number toppers: a 34- or 40-inch foil number for an age, an anniversary or a class year. It's the column style Dallas hosts ask for most.
  • Stars, hearts and crowns: shaped foils that suit grad parties, Valentine's events and a quinceañera's court.
  • Bubble balloon toppers: a clear bubble filled with confetti or feathers, or personalized with a name.
  • Grad caps and diplomas: made for grad parties and senior nights.
  • Logo or letter panels: for office events and store openings.

Sizing

How Tall Are Balloon Columns, and How Many Balloons Do They Need?

Most standard columns stand about 6 feet before the topper goes on.

Column heights and balloon counts
ColumnHeightBalloons (approx.)
Mini or tabletop column2–3 ft12–20
Standard classic or spiral column5–6 ft40–60 (11-inch)
Tall classic column7–8 ft60–80 (11-inch)
Organic column5–7 ft60–100+ (mixed sizes)

These counts cover the body of the column. Toppers, bases and any clusters at the foot add a handful more.

What size balloon for a column? Most columns are built from 11-inch latex balloons in four-balloon clusters, which makes a column about 18 to 20 inches wide. Organic columns add 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons for texture.

Pricing

How Much Do Balloon Columns Cost in Dallas?

A single column usually runs $85 to $275, depending on the style and the topper.

Balloon column pricing
ColumnStarting at
Mini tabletop column$45
Classic column$85
Spiral column (2–4 colors)$105
Themed column (graduation, homecoming, holiday)$145
Organic column$165
Balloon tower with number or star topper$180

Prices are per column, delivered and placed within about 40 miles of Downtown Dallas.

How much for two balloon columns? Since most entrances get a pair, budget about $170 to $360 for two, more for organic columns with custom toppers. A pair is priced below two singles, and adding an arch between them costs less than ordering the two pieces separately.

Placement

Where Balloon Columns Go

Columns look their best in pairs, framing something worth seeing.

Entrances

On both sides of a front door, a ballroom entry or a storefront, so nobody has to ask where the party is.

Stages and DJ booths

A column at each end of the stage or DJ table frames the speakers and performers in every shot.

Wedding aisles

Short columns lining the aisle, or a tall pair where the couple says their vows.

Dance floors

One at each corner of the floor, sometimes linked overhead with a garland canopy.

Trade show booths

Brand-color columns make a booth easy to find from down the aisle at the Irving Convention Center in Las Colinas or a downtown expo floor.

Gyms and school halls

Rows of school-color columns for graduations, prom, homecoming dances and senior night.

Occasions

Balloon Columns for Graduations, Weddings, Birthdays and Holidays

In Dallas, columns are busiest during graduation season and homecoming, but they fit nearly any event.

  • Graduation: school-color towers finished with a cap, a star or the class year, for backyard grad parties, prom and senior night.
  • Homecoming: spirit columns for pep rallies, homecoming dances and the front porch during homecoming week.
  • Weddings and bridal showers: organic columns in white and gold or blush at the ceremony and the reception.
  • Birthdays: a birthday column with the age on top, from a first birthday to a 60th.
  • Gender reveals: pink and blue columns crowned with a question-mark topper.
  • Corporate events and trade shows: columns in your company palette for expo booths, office lobbies and ribbon cuttings.
  • Holidays and quinceañeras: Christmas, Halloween, Valentine's, Easter and 4th of July columns, plus columns flanking the court's entrance at a quinceañera.

Outdoor columns

Outdoor Balloon Columns in Dallas Weather

A column is tall and top-heavy, so it catches wind. Outdoor columns are built with that in mind.

  • Outdoor columns get heavier bases and are tied to a post, rail or fence whenever one is close by.
  • Air-filled columns outlast helium ones outdoors by a wide margin.
  • Shade makes the difference: a Dallas summer afternoon fades and pops latex within a few hours, and dark colors heat up first.
  • On busy streets and in open strip-center parking lots, we place storefront columns where the building blocks the south wind.

Longevity

How Long Does a Balloon Column Last?

Several days indoors. A few hours in full summer sun.

Air-filled and kept in an air-conditioned room, a balloon column looks good for several days and often a week. In outdoor shade, figure about a day. In direct Dallas summer sun, the latex starts to cloud and pop within a few hours. For indoor events we can build columns one to two days early, which helps with morning graduations, school assemblies and Friday homecoming events.

Questions

Balloon Columns in Dallas: FAQ

How much do balloon columns cost?

Our classic columns start at $85 each, spiral columns at $105, organic columns at $165 and towers with toppers at $180. Most entrances use two.

How many balloons are in a balloon column?

Around 40 to 60 11-inch balloons for a classic 5–6 ft column, 60 to 80 for a 7–8 ft column, and 60 to 100 or more in mixed sizes for an organic column.

What size balloons are used for a balloon column?

Most columns use 11-inch latex balloons in four-balloon clusters. Organic columns mix in 5-inch and 16- to 18-inch balloons.

How long does a balloon column last?

Several days indoors when air-filled, about a day in outdoor shade and a few hours in direct Dallas summer sun.

How far in advance can a balloon column be made?

One to two days ahead for indoor events. Outdoor columns in summer should be set up on the day.

What's the difference between a balloon column, a balloon tower and a balloon pillar?

Nothing that matters for your order. All three names mean a freestanding stack of balloons on a pole and weighted base, and "tower" is often used when there's a big topper.

Can balloon columns have a number on top?

Yes. A 34- or 40-inch foil number is our most popular topper, used for birthdays, anniversaries and class years.

Do balloon columns need helium?

No. Columns are air-filled and supported by the pole and base. Only a floating topper or a bubble balloon might use helium.

What is an organic balloon column?

It's a column built from mixed balloon sizes in loose clusters instead of identical stacked rings, so it looks fuller and softer, like an organic arch.
